Weekend ramp closures in effect as eastbound side of I-4 shifts

News 6 traffic anchor Amy Biondello gives details on planned construction

ORLANDO, Fla. – More work is scheduled this weekend on I-4.

The eastbound side of I-4 is preparing to shift in the heart of the downtown stretch of the highway.

The westbound lanes shifted a few weeks ago about 11 feet between Colonial Drive and Anderson Street. The eastbound side of I-4 is scheduled to move this weekend, and much like the westbound side of the highway, ramp closures will be in effect.

"Starting as early as 10 o'clock Saturday night, we'll start having lane closures and closures of three ramps in the downtown area," I-4 Ultimate Project public information officer David Parks said. “We're going to close the eastbound entrance ramp from Anderson, as well as the westbound 408 to eastbound I-4 ramp, as well as the eastbound exit to Amelia Street."

Officials said drivers traveling in the late night or overnight throughout the weekend can expect to feel most of the impacts.

"And then by 9:30 Sunday morning, this shift will be in place and all the lanes will be reopened, including the ramps," Parks said.

When the work is done, the shift will take eastbound travel lanes from where they are now, to about 30 feet toward the inside of the highway.

"This is something we've been working on for well over a year. By shifting all the traffic into the middle, onto this new purple section, that then creates room for crews to come in and start (demolishing) out the bridges over (the) top of South Street, over (the) top of Church, so that we can get in there and start building the permanent new elevated lanes of I-4," Parks said.

News 6 traffic anchor Amy Biondello said it's important to remember that Big Drive construction work is weather-dependent.

“Right now, it looks like clear skies through the weekend,” Biondello said.
