Big Drive construction moving ahead at 'full force'

Work on Maitland Boulevard and Kirkman Road to continue

ORLANDO, Fla. – Drivers who have traveled on Maitland Boulevard and Kirkman Road any time in the last year and a half know all too well that the “Big Drive” is in full swing at the very busy overpass. News 6 traffic anchor Amy Biondello provided an update on what drivers can expect in the area over the next few weeks.

“The month of May is shaping up to be another busy one for crews at the Maitland Boulevard and I-4 interchange," Biondello said.

There are no new projects kicking off this week, but existing work is moving ahead as scheduled. The hot spots in areas like Kirkman Road and Maitland Boulevard will remain that way for the foreseeable future.

The list of hot spots will be growing over the next four years.

When the big drive reaches completion in 2021, 15 major intersections will be redesigned, 140 bridges re-constructed and four express toll lanes put into commission.

Dry weather in Central Florida over the last few weeks has helped keep construction on schedule. Right now, it seems that girder installation is on schedule.

“For late night and early morning drivers, (there is) some good news,” Biondello said. "We should have a few weeks off from those rolling roadblocks."

Those roadblocks will be returning in June, I-4 officials said.

News 6 will continue to keep drivers updated every step of the way.
