70-year-old man struck, killed while crossing road in Deltona

Victim was walking in unlit area, Volusia deputies say

DELTONA, Fla. – A 70-year-old man was struck and killed late Wednesday as he tried to cross a road in Volusia County, deputies said.

The fatal crash was reported around 11 p.m. on Doyle Road near Courtland Boulevard in Deltona.

Volusia County sheriff's deputies said a red Dodge Caravan driven by Larissa Zellerkraut, 37, of Deltona, hit Isaias Padilla Hernandez, of Deltona, as he crossed the road.

Hernandez was crossing from the south to the north in an unlit area, and he was in the eastbound lane when he was struck, deputies said. Zellerkraut attempted to swerve toward the center line to avoid hitting him, but Hernandez was struck by the passenger side of the van, deputies said.

Authorities said there were no indications Zellerkraut was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol. She and two other passengers in the van were not injured.

Doyle Road was shut down for five hours during an investigation.
