4 people injured in crash involving semi in New Smyrna Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A rear-end crash involving a semitruck with multiple injuries shut down State Road 44 Saturday morning, according to New Smyrna Beach officials.

The crash happened near SR 44 and Kirkland Drive, not far from the Tomoka Wildlife Management area, Mike Greene, with the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department, said.

Photos from the scene show an SUV smashed into the back of the tractor-trailer.

Four patients were transported via helicopter to the hospital with assistance from Air One from Volusia County and Air Care 3 from Altamonte Springs, Greene said.

Drivers were asked to use alternate routes, because SR 44 may be closed for some time.
