MELBOURNE, Fla. – It sounds like a scene out of the "Wild Wild West" but police were actually investigating an incident Thursday involving at least one driver who fired gunshots at another vehicle.

News 6 partner Florida Today reported the shooting happened about 1:45 p.m. in the area of Dairy Road and Florida Avenue, a busy cross-section of traffic located in Melbourne and West Melbourne, police reported.

“We’ve made contact with a witness, and we know that at least one party was shooting," said Sgt. Marc Claycomb, of the Melbourne Police Department. "We found casings, but we haven’t located the vehicles or the parties involved.”

There were reports that both vehicles may have exchanged gunfire, he said.

Six bullet casings were found in the roadway.

Witnesses told police that a man with dreadlocks stepped out of a silver vehicle and fired rounds toward a white sport utility vehicle.

Witnesses also said it appeared the SUV was struck, although police have not been able to locate the vehicle to verify that account.

No motive for the shooting was reported, however police said that it does not appear to be road rage.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call police at 321-608-6422.
