Wrong-way driver killed in head-on crash on I-95 in Volusia, FHP says

Asphalt spills onto interstate during secondary crash in Edgewater

EDGEWATER, Fla. – A 23-year-old Daytona Beach man was killed Wednesday morning in a head-on crash he caused on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Devon Standish died in the wreck, which was reported around 12:40 a.m. on southbound I-95 near State Road 442 in Edgewater.

The other driver, Logan Aschendorf, 22, of Boca Raton, was critically injured, according to the FHP.

Southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for more than 13 hours.

According to the FHP, Standish was driving a 2010 Honda Insight north in the southbound lanes for an unknown reason and struck a 2018 Cadillac SUV head-on.

Standish was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later released dramatic video of Edgewater police and Volusia County sheriff's deputies pulling a driver from the vehicle as flames burned nearby.

Aschendorf, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, troopers said.

The FHP said it's not yet known if alcohol played a role in the crash.

After the fatal wreck, a UPS semitrailer slowed down because of the crash and was struck from behind by a dump truck hauling hot asphalt, troopers said. Asphalt spilled onto the interstate.

"This will be a long term closure as the asphalt will have to be removed and the roadway repaired," the FHP said.

The dump truck driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, troopers said. The semi driver suffered minor injuries.

Southbound I-95 drivers were forced to detour at State Road 44 or Indian River Boulevard (S.R. 442).

The crash remains under investigation.
