Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash near Cocoa; driver arrested
FHP investigates fatal wreck on Friday Road near SR 520
COCOA, Fla. – A driver accused of running over and killing a 38-year-old man with his vehicle near Cocoa on New Year’s Day was arrested after authorities say he left the scene of the crash.
Eric Ferguson, 48, of Melbourne, was driving north on Friday Road around 3:20 a.m. when he ran over Jason Strandberg, 38, of Cocoa, according to the Florida Highway Patrol crash report.
Ferguson called the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office around 5 a.m. and said he hit someone with his vehicle.
Strandberg was found dead on Friday Road, just north of State Road 520, according to the crash report.
Ferguson was arrested by an FHP homicide investigator and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash.
According to the arrest report, Ferguson’s car had front-end damage consistent with striking a person.
A person who lived at Ferguson’s home told investigators he called her at 4:02 a.m. in a panic and sayid something “really bad happened and the car or transmission died and (he) needed a ride.”
The crash remains under investigation.
