Man arrested after 2-year-old girl injured in hit-and-run in Daytona Beach

Kenyatta Henry, 23, faces charge of hit-and-run resulting in serious bodily injury

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 2-year-old girl was injured Tuesday in a hit-and-run crash in Daytona Beach, and police later arrested the suspect, who is related to the city’s mayor.

The crash happened around 1:15 p.m. in the 800 block of Forest Lane in Daytona Beach.

Kenyatta Henry, 23, a relative of Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry, was later arrested on charges of a hit-and-run resulting in serious bodily injury.

The mayor released a statement after learning about the arrest.

“My entire family’s thoughts and prayers are with the child and her family during this difficult time, and I am hopeful for her quick and complete recovery. I believe that it is imperative that we prioritize the well-being of the child, and I trust that the legal proceedings will be conducted with full transparency and impartiality,” he said.

Daytona Beach police tweeted after the girl was injured that officers were searching for a black Dodge Charger.

Arrest made in hit-and-run that hospitalized 2-year-old girl

Family members of the girl told News 6 that the toddler was crossing the road with her father when she was hit by the car. They added that the car stopped briefly before driving away.

The girl was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach in stable condition before being airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, police said.

Just before 4 p.m., officers went to the 500 block of Fulton Street after receiving calls about a “disturbance” related to the hit-and-run, a news release by the department shows. Officers found the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run and the driver, identified by police as Kenyatta Henry, the release said.

Henry was arrested and booked into jail.

No other details have been released.
