OVIEDO, Fla. – A 20-year-old Orlando man who had either fallen or was lying on Alafaya Trail in Seminole County was run over and killed Friday morning by a pickup truck, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Austin Ekern, of Oviedo, was pronounced dead the scene.

Ekern was a student at Florida State University and the son of a longtime staff member at the University of Central Florida, according to UCF police.

The FHP said a 66-year-old Orlando man driving a 2000 Chevrolet pickup north on Alafaya Trail did not see Ekern in the road and ran over him.

Northbound lanes of Alafaya Trail were blocked at Econ River Place near McCulloch Road, north of the University of Central Florida.

"Road closed for extended period," the Florida Highway Patrol tweeted shortly after the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
