Man arrested on DUI charge after striking deputy vehicle, police say

Police: Suspect also faces multiple drug charges

APOPKA, Fla. – A man was arrested Friday morning after police said he struck and damaged an Orange County sheriff's deputy cruiser.

Apopka police arrived to an area near Orange Blossom Trail after receiving a call at 4:22 a.m. that a deputy had been involved in a crash.

Officers said Sonny Almanza, 25, of Apopka, was sitting near his Nissan near the deputy's vehicle and was acting suspiciously, as he repeatedly locked his car when deputies walked by it during the crash investigation.

Police said they asked Almanza if there was anything inside his car that they should know about, to which he replied, "Yes," according to the arrest report.

Soon after, officers said they found several bags with marijuana in them and cocaine inside Almanza's car.

Another officer arrived to conduct a sobriety exercise on Almanza, according to the report, and later arrested him on a charge of driving under the influence. Police also determined that Almanza was responsible for hitting the deputy's vehicle.

In addition to the DUI charge, Almanza is facing multiple drug charges, according to the report.

Both vehicles involved in the crash were estimated to have $7,000 in damages to each, police said.

The deputy whose vehicle was struck during the crash was taken to Florida Hospital south for her injuries, police said. No details about her condition were immediately available.
