Brevard County offering Section 8 to displaced Titusville tenants

Inspectors deem Blue Beach Club apartments uninhabitable following hurricane

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – While the rest of the Brevard County is back to normal following Hurricane Matthew, a lot of people at the Blue Beach Club apartments in Titusville on U.S. 1 say they're still going through hell. And that's despite word from management that help is now on the way.

"It's ridiculous. It's not fair. This place isn't making it any better," displaced tenant Holden Adams said.

Adams is just 25-years-old but he's lived at Blue Beach Club (also known as Bay Towers) longer than almost any other tenant.

"We're moving out of here," Adams said. "They don't care at all. They want money and that's it."

Hurricane Matthew blew off part of the building's roof, killed the lights and shut off the water.

"The smell is just so horrific up there we're having a hard time breathing," said displaced tenant Sara Brooks, wearing a mask as she spoke to News 6.

Five days later, comes the news some have been waiting for.

The Brevard County Housing Authority is signing up tenants for Section 8 because it could be weeks before this old building is reopen.

Seventy-six-year-old tenant Frances Jacobs tells News 6 she's signing up, saying she just wants a roof over her head.

"There's a lot of people that are on the streets, sleeping in their cars," Jacobs said. "It's just one of those things that we're going to have to bare with."

Others says Section 8 is not the kind help they're looking for.

Adams wants his rent back.

"I'm trying to make my way to live. I'm not trying to get Section 8," Adams said. "That's not the way to go about it. I want my rent back. I paid rent two days ago."

Bay Towers management declined an interview request from News 6 Tuesday.
