Severe weather possible Sunday with high risk of strong winds, storms

80 percent chance of rain Sunday ahead of cold front

ORLANDO, Fla. – Sunday brings both high rain chances and a risk of severe storms.

"Safety is key," News 6 meteorologist Samara Cokinos said. "Remember, when thunder roars, head indoors."

Sunday will have an 80 percent chance of rain, with some possible storms. Gusty winds and occasional downpours are likely. Lake and Sumter counties could see rain in the morning hours, with rain spreading across the area through midday and early afternoon.

"The marginal risk for severe storms remains for the west coast, but we can't rule out a stray strong storm lingering into parts of Central Florida in the afternoon," Cokinos said. "The main threat will be gusts of winds and heavy rainfall."

Highs on Sunday will reach 75 degrees in Daytona Beach, 76 degrees in Orlando and 79 degrees in Melbourne.

Skies will clear beginning Sunday night as cooler, drier air moves into Central Florida. Cold air will stick around until Wednesday.

Monday and Tuesday will only see daytime temperatures in the 60s, while Monday night and Tuesday night will see temps in the 40s around Orlando and into the 30s around Ocala.

Rain chances return by Friday.
