Apopka home smashed by falling tree during Hurricane Irma

Woman fears more rain could damage what's left of her belongings

APOPKA, Fla. – A woman whose home was smashed by a falling tree during Hurricane Irma fears more rain could damage what's left of her belongings.

Kareen Dowe's hands trembled as she told News 6 she was sitting on her couch Sunday night when Hurricane Irma sent a tree through her ceiling.

"My kids were screaming, 'Mom! Mom!'" she said. "I could not open the window for some reason. It could not open. All I can say is this is how I'm going to die."

Dowe said her neighbor took her and her two children into his home to ride out the storm, only to have a tree fall through his roof.

Four days later, she and her children are living in a hotel, her house has been red-tagged as unsafe, and more rain is in the forecast.

She said whatever the rain takes, it can have.

"It's going to be more of a disaster, but it's just material stuff," she said. "What can I do? Yeah. What can I do?"

Friends of Dowe have set up a Facebook fundraising page for her and her two children. You can help her by clicking here.
