Heroic efforts save Clermont man trapped in home during Hurricane Irma

Police officer takes surgeon to hospital during height of storm

CLERMONT, Fla. – First responders saved a Clermont man early Sunday by extricating him from his home, which was damaged by a tree toppled during Hurricane Irma, and escorting a surgeon to a hospital, police said.

Clermont police said officers were called around 1:30 a.m., when Irma was bearing down on Central Florida, and assisted firefighters at a home in the 100 block of East Minnehaha Avenue.

A tree fell and a large branch crashed through the roof of a home, trapping a 23-year-old man who had been sleeping in his bed, police said. Clermont police said officers helped extricate the man, who was pinned and suffered serious injuries.

A Clermont fire chief took the man to South Lake Hospital, and an hour later, hospital staff said he needed emergency surgery.

A Clermont Police officer went to the surgeon’s home and took him to the hospital to perform life-saving surgery.

The victim is now in stable condition.
