Massive hole opens behind Apopka school

Storm water from Hurricane Irma may have created hole

A hole opens in Apopka.

APOPKA, Fla. – A massive hole, possibly caused by Hurricane Irma, opened Wednesday morning near an Apopka school.

The hole opened behind Apopka Memorial Middle School and swallowed a section of the West Orange Trail, city officials said in a Facebook post.

The hole, north of Votaw Road, south of McCoy Village Court and east of Lake McCoy, appeared to be caused by storm water from Hurricane Irma, officials said.

Residents are urged to stay away from the area.

No other details have been released.

The City of Apopka responded Wednesday morning to a very large hole that opened in the area behind Apopka Memorial Middle School, eating up a section of the West Orange Trail. The hole - located north of Votaw Road and south of McCoy Village Court - appeared to be caused by storm water from Hurricane Irma. Lake Mcoy is east of there. Residents are urged to stay away from this immediate area.
