Magruder said that you want to make sure the home is a tight envelope that cannot be penetrated by wind or rain driven water.
The No.1 issue following the 2004 hurricane season, in which three storms crisscrossed the state, was water intrusion through windows and cracks in stucco, Magruder said.
Magruder also suggests checking the FEMA flood maps to make sure you know if your home is in a flood zone.
Even though your home may not be on the coast and susceptible to a tidal surge, heavy rains can flood neighborhoods and it is imperative you have flood insurance. Many new developments have not been tested for real flooding, Magruder added.
