Scattered storms move over Central Florida Thursday night

60 percent chance of rain Friday

Scattered showers will pour over parts of Orange, Seminole, Lake, and Volusia counties into Thursday evening. The main threat from these storms will be heavy rain, lightning, and winds up to 50 mph.

After the rain, look for an overnight low of 78 in Orlando.

For Friday, rain chances go up to 60 percent and the high will be 93. On Saturday, the chance of rain will surge to 70 percent with a high of 90.

The big story in the tropics now becomes Hurricane Irma. In the last 24 hours, the hurricane has ramped up its wind speed 50 knots.

The rapid intensification has pushed its winds to115 mph.

The forecast track has the system becoming a Category 4 storm by Monday and be just east of the Lesser Antilles by Tuesday afternoon.

With the warm sea temperatures in front of the storm and no shear to slow it down, it would not be surprising to see Irma reach Category 5 status in the next five days.

After Tuesday, there is no great model agreement as to where the system will go. Some take the hurricane well east of Florida and the southeast coast of the USA.

Others take the storm through the Florida Straits and into the Gulf of Mexico.

The bottom line here is that we are days away from knowing what the risk will be to us and other areas of the USA.
