Severe weather possible in Central Florida

Storms expected in Orlando area Friday morning

ORLANDO, Fla. – After another brisk start to the day, strong storms might be headed to Central Florida, along with a brief warmup.

"Storms are approaching from the Gulf of Mexico that will move in early Friday, and then will be ongoing for the afternoon Friday," News 6 meteorologist Troy Bridges said.

High temperatures in Orlando on Thursday will reach 70 degrees. The average high is 71.

"Rain chances will be minimal through the day but will increase through the evening to 50 percent," Bridges said. "Rain chances increase to 90 percent off and on through Friday. Some storms on Friday could rotate and eventually lead to tornadoes."

The main threat on Friday are strong winds gusting up to 50 mph.

Friday's high will be in the mid-70s.

Rain chances will be 20 percent on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday's high will be in the mid-70s, but another cooldown hits the region after that.

Expect a high of 67 degrees on Monday.

"Meanwhile, we are pinpointing a hurricane in the open Atlantic," Bridges said. "The storm's name is Alex, and it is the first time we've had a January hurricane since 1938."

Alex poses no threat to the United States.
