High schoolers yell racial slurs in argument over election

Extra deputies called to Pine Ridge High School

DELTONA, Fla. – Tense confrontations last week brought extra deputies to a local high school.

According to the News Journal, problems sprang up at Pine Ridge High School on Wednesday and Friday, because of the election. Several students reportedly got into shouting matches, even yelling racial slurs.

Volusia County Schools and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office released a joint statement Monday providing further information about the incidents and warning of the dangers of spreading rumors.

Officials said students verbally taunted one another during the argument and one student made a comment about how guns should be allowed at school. Students who overheard that comment told their peers, and the comment was distorted as it spread through the rumor mill, authorities said.

No threat was made or intended, officials said.

The statement also outlined another instance in which a student made a social media post saying she was going to stay home from school on Monday because she heard there was going to be a shooting on campus.

Officials said no threat was made and they were unable to find any weapons on campus.

Parents expressed concern about the rumors, but deputies said when they tried to track down a source of the threats, the information "turned out to be distorted or based on unconfirmed hearsay."

School officials warned students and parents to be cautious about what they post on social media and refrain from spreading rumors.

Extra deputies were brought to the school on Monday to provide additional supervision.
