ORLANDO, Fla. – A 3-year-old boy who was found unconscious, suffering from trauma and having difficulty breathing at an Orange County apartment complex Friday afternoon has been identified.
Xavier Mokarzel-Satchel died as a result of his injuries and officials said it appears that he died from blunt force trauma, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
The boy was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital after being found unconscious inside an apartment at Eagle Landing on Silver Star Road at 12:13 p.m. Deputies said that the boy was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
"It breaks our hearts when we are talking about a child who is clinging to life," Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jane Watrel said. "This is a child abuse investigation. This child was severely injured at the hands of adults."
The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Xavier's mother, Brandi Mokarzel has been charged with aggravated child neglect.
The mother's two friends Callene Barton and Lakesha Lewis also face charges.
She is currently hospitalized and faces charges of aggravated child abuse, first-degree murder and hindering communication to law enforcement.
Lewis has been charged with aggravated child abuse and first-degree murder. Barton was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for observation after she complained that she was not feeling well.
Deputies said Lewis' 4-year-old son, who also lived in the apartment is now in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
“We are trying to unravel what happened and how exactly he received these severe injuries,” Watrel said.
