9 dogs seized from Deltona home

Cages found stacked inside living room

DELTONA, Fla. – Animal Control investigators are deciding whether they will file criminal charges against a family after seizing nine dogs from its home.

Deltona Animal Control investigators said they were asked to check on the well-being of the dogs in early January at 1630 Matheson St.

They said they found at least nine dogs inside the home who needed medical attention. They executed a search warrant Monday, and they found cages stacked inside the living room, some of which had been infested with roaches.

Nine dogs were seized and taken to Halifax Humane Society, where the staff said they're being treated for various medical conditions.

Miguel Abi-Hassan, Halifax Humane Society's CEO, said one dog is totally blind, another has a skin condition causing him to lose his hair, while another dog has skin tags and open wounds on his backside.

While the case has not yet been classified as hoarding, Abi-Hassan said it would make the third case of animal hoarding in Volusia County since Jan. 1.

"We want people to be aware that this is a disease," he said. "This is something that affects our homes, our neighborhoods and, of course, our pets. If anyone is aware of a hoarding case, please contact law enforcement."

During the search of the home, Volusia County sheriff's investigators said they found marijuana and drug paraphernalia. They arrested Samantha Hamilton, 32, and released her on her own recognizance.
