Accidents at Apopka intersection prompt city to take action

City looking to install traffic light

APOPKA, Fla. – It's an intersection that sees its fair share of traffic. According to a recent study conducted by the city of Apopka about 5,000 people drive along Martin Street daily.

Vick Road sees thousands more with 13,000 drivers on an average day.

From 2012 to 2016, 16 accident reports have been filed.

Prompting the city to take action.
"The main improvement on the intersection will be a traffic signal. It likely will include a cross walk in there to make it safer," said Robert Sargent with the city of Apopka.

The intersection neighbors Apopka High School.

Sargent says one of the main issues is the lack of direction in the area.

"Right now the main thing you're seeing is cars trying to dodge and decide who gets to go left or right right in front of the school which is one of the biggest high schools that we have in Orange County area," said Sargent.

Sargent says a contributing factor to safety issues in the area is where students are getting out of the vehicle for school.

"A lot of people do not realize that in the city of Apopka it is a city ordinance that requires you drop off and pick up your student on school property," said Sargent.

City leaders are currently working to complete the design phase of the project.

Sargent expects to see that head to council in the next couple of months.

From there the city will begin to take bids.

Sargent hopes to see a traffic light in the area by the end of the year.
