Altamonte Springs officer kills knife-wielding man

Officer says man lunged at him

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – A man is dead after being shot by an Altamonte Springs police officer, authorities say.

The shooting happened around 12:35 a.m. Sunday at the Remington Place Apartments. The complex is located on Lorriaine Drive off Douglas Avenue.

Police told Local 6 they were called to the apartments to help 34-year-old Anthony Skyles, who was armed with a knife and threatening suicide.

When the officer got there, he said Skyles immediately confronted him with the knife.

The officer opened fire, hitting Skyles, who was taken to Florida Hospital Altamonte, where he died.

The officer is now on paid administrative leave, which is normal procedure for this type of investigation.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is looking into the officer's actions.
