Bicyclist hit by pickup truck, killed on US-1

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A 59-year-old man was killed Thursday when he was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle on U.S. 1.

A 2002 Chevy pickup truck was heading southbound on US-1 at 4:57 p.m. in the outside lanes when it hit the front of a bicycle that was traveling northbound on the outside white painted line of US-1.

The bicycle and the rider, David Smith, of Micco, hit the concrete divider wall of the southbound shoulder and the sidewalk. Smith was killed in the crash. The bicycle came to rest on the sidewalk.

The driver of the pickup truck, Tyler Gates, 21, of Vero Beach, was not injured.

The crash is still under investigation.
