Board: Florida teacher fired, didn't protect student

Board votes unanimously on teacher's dismissal

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – A longtime teacher has been fired after school officials say she failed to prevent a seventh-grader from being hit in a hallway.

The Stuart News reports that the St. Lucie County School Board voted unanimously last week to fire Dru Dehart after 13 years at Northport K-8 school.

School officials say Dehart should have submitted a referral to the office after the student verbally threatened her during class. Instead, they say she asked an eighth-grader to talk to him. However, the older student rounded up some friends and brought the younger student into the hallway where they hit him and held him against the wall.

The student says he had only wished out loud that he could curse out a teacher after Dehart yelled at him.
