Maitland Jewish Center cleared after bomb threat investigation

School, preschool, community center evacuated after threat called in

MAITLAND, Fla. – Maitland police have cleared the Jewish Center where a bomb threat was reported, prompting the evacuation of a school and community center on Tuesday morning.

Authorities said the Family Jewish Community Center at 851 N Maitland Avenue received a call from a man with a robotic voice saying that there was a device planted to take out a large number of children on Tuesday at around 10 a.m.

The school was cleared just before 1 p.m., but the community center will remain closed for the remainder of the day.

The school, preschool and community center voluntarily evacuated as authorities investigated.

The students were taken to Lake Sybelia Elementary School, where parents are able to pick up their children, but it will be a long wait as teachers will ensure children are going with the proper adults.

Southbound Maitland Avenue was also shut down at Maitland Boulevard as the investigation continued.

Maitland police say they are aware of a similar incident reported at a Jewish center in South Florida, but are focused on the local incident.
