VIERA, Fla. – An 89-year-old Melbourne man died Wednesday morning after he crashed into a fire hydrant and the water pulled him under his car when he got out, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported around 10:10 a.m. on Tavistock Drive and Crelford Way in a residential area of Viera.

The FHP said Robert Dreyer was driving a 2016 Mercedes G300 south on Tavistock Drive when he veered off the road and hit a hydrant.

Dreyer got out of his car and was pulled under the vehicle, troopers said.

Dreyer was taken to Viera Hospital, where he died, the FHP said.

Dreyer's cause of death has not been released.

An investigation is continuing.
