Brush fire burns near Daytona Beach school

Fires scorch acres across Central Florida

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Firefighters are monitoring for flareups after several brush fires were sparked across Central Florida over the weekend.

Two fires burned near homes Sunday in Daytona Beach.

The first fire reached a half-acre in size near the Bayberry Lakes subdivision.  As firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, embers ignited a second fire west of Champion Elementary School. The fire is estimated have burned approximately 110 acres. However, fire officials said there is no structural endangerment at this time.

Firefighters in Brevard County were also busy Sunday battling two separate wildfires.

In Palm Bay, a 15-acre brush fire reignited and was contained near Krassner Drive.  Another fire sparked up in Cocoa near Williams Point Boulevard.  Firefighters continued to monitor both areas early Monday.

In Orange County, flames burned nearly 20 acres near the Wedgefield subdivision.

"I looked out the window and the whole side of the canal is on fire," Tori McCullen said.

Some families rushed to grab what they could as flames grew dangerously close to homes on Saturday.

"I had no idea what to grab," McCullen said.  "I need to grab the baby and the dogs and that was my only concern."

The fire near Wedgefield destroyed a shed and damaged some fencing near a home.

Two other fires flared up Sunday evening in Orange County. Firefighters said the flames were quickly extinguished without any injuries or property damage.

Dry and windy conditions are expected to continue in Central Florida over the next couple days.  Firefighters urge everyone to take precautions to help prevent future fires from sparking up.
