"Last night I started ordering freeze-dried food just in case," said Christian Singleton.

Christian Singleton has been through four major hurricanes.

He's stocked up on the essentials. Now he's focusing his attention on the high-powered tools.

"I live on Belle Isle and we're covered with oaks and what happens is the limbs fall and the city crews can't come too fast so it's good if you and your neighbors can cut your way out slowly," said Singleton.

ACE Hardware associate Kevin Green and his staff have been busy since the doors opened Tuesday morning.

"You don't know that it will happen. You might get all stocked up and not have to use any of it. You just don't know," said Green.

Chainsaws are a hot item but people are still loading up on the essentials like batteries, lamps, flashlights and tarps.

And for those procrastinators, Green said, "if people need something they just need to come by. We'll be open at 6 a.m. and we'll be here at 6 a.m. every day even if the storm hits us. If we have to come and get stuff out of here with a flashlight for you we will."

If you're thinking about buying a generator but unsure which one to buy Green said a 5500 watt generator will fuel the essentials.

"This will run your house as far as your refrigerator, your TV ... your lights and some fans," said Green.

Other important things to remember:

- Keep your electronics charged and have a portable charger on standby
- Make sure important emergency information is in a secure place
- Take medications with you if you leave for a shelter
- Have a stock of canned food (with a can opener), water, batteries, tarp, flashlights
