800-pound leatherback turtle washes up on New Smyrna Beach

Front-end loader removes animal from beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A dead 800-pound leatherback turtle washed ashore Sunday in Volusia County.

The turtle washed up on New Smyrna Beach near the Dolphin Avenue walkover, beach officials said.

The turtle was determined to be at least 10 years old. Leatherbacks are known to live up to 30-plus years, officials said.

The turtle was removed from the beach.
