Deputy shoots carjacking suspect in Orange County

Deputy Ryan Oberlander not injured in incident

ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orange County sheriff's deputy shot an armed carjacking suspect Sunday night after a pursuit, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. near Carter Street and Collier Boulevard, not far from where an orange Hummer was stolen on Silver Star Road, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said James Sanders, 19, held a gun to the victim's head during the incident, but the victim was not injured.

Deputies spotted the Hummer and tried to pull over the driver, but Sanders began driving erratically and refused to stop, the Sheriff's Office said.

"Instead of just surrendering, he bails out of the vehicle with a firearm, which is a very dangerous situation for our deputy, who had to use force at this time," Orange County sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves said.

Sanders was taken into custody and is in stable condition, officials said.

The deputy, Ryan Oberlander, was not injured. Oberlander is a 10-year veteran with OSCO and is assigned to administrative duties per normal protocol for no less than a week.

It's not known if Sanders fired any shots at the deputy or how many shots the deputy fired.

"Our deputies will do everything to keep our community safe," Nieves said. "But they also have to maintain safety for themselves."
