Sheriff's deputies have been placed in all elementary schools in unincorporated Brevard in an "abundance of caution" after the massacre of 20 students and six school staff in Newtown, Conn., Local 6 has confirmed.
At Mims Elementary, deputies sat out front in the parking lot, as a temporary increase in patrols in wake of the shooting massacre.
"It makes me feel safer to know that they're at the schools already because there's been one there at Pinewood since this happened and I think it's an excellent idea," said grandmother Connie Duff.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey and Brevard Schools Superintendent Brian Binggeli will discuss the security measures to come up with a more permanent solutions.
"First advantage that comes to mind is just the deterrent aspect knowing that that person is on campus," Ivey told Local 6. "The second aspect to it is the immediacy of response."
Parents told Local 6 they believe it would be a positive addition.
"I think it's a good idea I think it's something that's probably been needed for a while especially after what just happened," said mother Danielle Griffin.
