Val Demings wins U.S. House District 10 race in Florida

Demings defeats Republican challenger Thuy Lowe

Former Orlando police Chief Val Demings won the 10th U.S. Congressional District race on Election Day, according to The Associated Press.

Demings, a Democrat, defeated Republican challenger Thuy Lowe for the seat with at least 66 percent of the vote as of 7:35 p.m.

News 6 reporter Erik Von Ancken is at the election watch party with Demings and her husband, Jerry Demings, who is running for re-election for Orange County Sheriff.

In the August primary, Demings defeated Fatima Rita Fahmy, Bob Poe and Geraldine F. Thompson in a battle to represent the new District 10, which was created by redistricting, meaning that there was no incumbent.

Demings won over 50 percent of the primary vote.

Former U.S. Rep. Daniel Webster did not seek re-election in the general election.

Demings served as Orlando police chief from 2007 to 2011.

The district includes parts of Lake, Orange and Polk counties.
