Farm Share, city of Casselberry team up to help feed families

Bags of food donated to people in need

CASSELBERRY, Fla. – Volunteers didn't let a little rain stop them from giving out thousands of pounds of free food to central Florida families in need Saturday morning.

"Sometimes you just need a little help," Debra Reeder said.

Sometimes a little help comes in large bags packed to the top with fresh fruits and vegetables.

"We've got vegetables, we've got zucchini, we got bananas, we got squash, we've got green beans, we've got tomatoes, we've got bread, we've got sweets,' state Rep. Bob Cortes said. "We got a little bit of everything."

Cortes teamed up with the city of Casselberry and Farm Share to give 1,000 families free food. An assembly line of volunteers filled the bags for the long line of cars filled with people who are thankful for the fruitful gesture.

"Sometimes you just can't make ends meet. I'm a single mom, I have a child with a disability and I've been ill, so this really helps," Reeder, who received several bags of free food said.

Everyone took home as much as they needed, like Reeder, who says she doesn't always get to serve fresh food to her family.

"The vegetables are really great cause it's one of the things you have to walk by when you're on a fixed income," she said.

Families were driving up empty, but leaving with their trunks and stomachs full.

"It's wonderful to see all this food and know that it's going to good families and some children will be well fed tonight and so we love that," Casselberry Vice-Mayor Colleen Hufford.

"This is getting results. People are liking it. You can see lot of folks coming by and they're very grateful of us giving the food away," Cortes said.

Cortes says this is the second food give away he has organized. He plans to hold more in the future.
