KISSIMMEE, Fla. – A woman who crashed into several vehicles in Kissimmee after being clocked at 112 mph now stands accused of intentionally trying to kill her children and a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, who opened fire on her.
Angela Estrella, 36, of Miami, who was being held pending a mental evaluation after the Tuesday incident, faces charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, child abuse, fleeing to elude, aggravated battery on a law enforcement official, aggravated battery, reckless driving, leaving the scene involving injury and carrying a concealed weapon.
She was also cited for speeding (112 mph in a 70 mph zone), passing a stopped school bus and failure to stop for a red light.
The FHP said Estrella rammed at least two cars along the northbound Turnpike and troopers tried to pull her over but were unsuccessful.
An FHP spokeswoman said Estrella caused another crash near Shady Lane in Kissimmee, and troopers tried again to stop her, but she drove her SUV at one of them as he exited his vehicle.
The trooper, 40-year-old Jose Nieves Jr., opened fire into the SUV, but Estrella and her children, and 18-year-old girl and a younger boy, were not injured, the FHP said.
Estrella continued to speed away until she crashed yet again at U.S. 192 and Michigan Avenue, troopers said.
Estrella was removed from her SUV and was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
Estrella's children were turned over to family members, according to FHP.
Troopers said Estrella recently moved to Miami from New York.
