Fire breaks out near Daytona International Speedway

Blaze burns at One Daytona project

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A fire broke out Friday at One Daytona, a construction project near the Daytona International Speedway, sending a large plume of black smoke into the sky.

One Daytona is a $150 million retail dining and entertainment project that is scheduled to open in 2017.

Daytona Beach fire officials said the fire started on the roof of a building that will become a movie theater when insulation caught fire from welding activities taking place below.

There were 55 construction workers on site when the fire started, 25 of whom were on the roof, officials said.

Workers used fire extinguishers to try to put the fire out, but winds spread the flames, officials said. No one was injured.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control.

The extent of the damage is unknown, and a structural engineer will inspect the structure.

“The pre-planning and coordination efforts of all parties resulted in limited damage to a project which is so important to our community” Fire Chief Dru Driscoll said.

The International Speedway Corporation does not expect the fire to affect construction deadlines.
