Fire forces students off school bus

Melbourne High School students uninjured in blaze

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A Brevard County school bus carrying 20 students was evacuated Thursday morning after a fire started near the overhead air conditioning compartment, police said.

The fire broke out on the bus, which was carrying Melbourne High School students, about 8:10 a.m. at the intersection of Sutton Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard in West Melbourne.

"It appears to be electrical in nature," said Lt. Richard Cordeau, spokesman for the West Melbourne Police Department.  "All of the students and the driver are off the bus. No injuries were reported."

A West Melbourne police officer spotted a small fire burning in the overhead area of the bus and used an extinguisher to put out the fire.

Another school bus was used to take the students to the school.
