Community works to help mom, baby rescued from fire in Altamonte Springs

Firefighter, police officer also treated for smoke inhalation

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – A woman and her baby were rescued late Monday from a fire at an Altamonte Springs apartment fire, officials said.

The fire broke out at the Charter Pointe Apartments on Ballard Street, and firefighters heard a woman and baby screaming for help on the second floor, officials said.

Fire crews responded just after 10 p.m. on Monday.

On a 911 call, a woman said that the fire started in her apartment.

"My light it fell in my closet and my whole closet just caught fire," the woman said to the dispatcher.

Upstairs, a woman with her infant was also calling for help.

"Just me and my baby. He's choking!" the woman is heard saying to dispatchers.

There were 12 apartment units damaged in the fire.

Other tenants are the apartment complex said they are collecting donations for the family, that can be dropped off to the leasing office located at 919 Ballard Street, Altamonte Springs.

The duo was rescued but had to be taken to a hospital, but were released on Tuesday.

An Altamonte Springs police officer and a firefighter were also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The officer has been released, and the firefighter is expected to be released late Tuesday evening.

Officials said the fire is believed to have started because of an electrical issue on the first floor. Two units were damaged by the blaze, and 10 others were damaged from smoke and water, officals said.
