Human remains found near Varn Park in Flagler Beach

Remains not related to those found last week, deputies say

Flagler Beach.

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Authorities are investigating the discovery of human remains found north of Varn Park, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said.

The remains were found by some workers cleaning up Hurricane Matthew debris Monday, about a half-mile north of the park, in the sand dunes along the beach at the 3800 block of North Ocean Shore Boulevard, or A1A. Workers saw bones sticking out from the sand and called authorities.

"Had Hurricane Matthew not eroded the sand dunes to the extent it did, we would not have located the bones at this time," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The skeleton was removed from a shallow grave and will be taken to the medical examiner's office to determine the age, sex and cause of death.

The new findings are not related to the discovery of human remains last week near the Flagler-Volusia County line, deputies said.

Detectives from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, along with crime scene officials and investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, will return to the scene Tuesday. It’s not clear how long it will take officials to evaluate and excavate the site.

Anyone with information on this case, or any other crime in the county, is asked to call 386-313-4911.
