Ad for secret shoppers scammed victims out of $2K, Volusia cops say

Victims were sent fake checks, deputies say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Volusia County deputies said two victims were scammed out of $2,000 when they fell for a fake ad that called for "secret shoppers."

The online ad sought these shoppers to interact with store employees. The victims, a 36-year-old DeBary woman and a 52-year-old Ormond Beach man, were sent checks and instructions to put the money on pre-paid debit cards, then were asked to send the debit card pin numbers to their new employer.

Before the victims realized the checks were fake, the money from their accounts had already been wiped clean, deputies said.

Deputies said the scams take advantage of the delay between the time when the victim deposits the check and when the bank discovers it is false.
