Boater's body recovered at Blue Spring State Park ID'd

Victim ID'd as 24-year-old man

ORANGE CITY, Fla. – A 24-year-old man's body was recovered Thursday by a dive team after a canoe flipped at Blue Spring State Park, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

The man was identified as Jose Reyes Waldo, of Bronx, New York.

The FWC said five people were camping with family members at the park, and they canoed down the river near the campground.

Three people were in one rented canoe, and two people were in another. Officials said the canoe with two people flipped.

One person had trouble swimming. Officials said a relative jumped in to help but was unsuccessful.

A dive team with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office recovered the man's body in the St. Johns River just outside the park, officials said.

The boaters had safety equipment with them, but they did not wear their life jackets.

"We need to prevent these kinds of tragedies by wearing your life jacket," FWC's Greg Workman said.
