SANFORD, Fla. – The attorney for George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman who shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, will appeal the judge's decision to stay on his client's second-degree murder case.
Attorney Mark O'Mara announced on Monday that his defense team will appeal the decision of Judge Kenneth Lester to stay on the case. Lester ruled two weeks ago that he wouldn't not remove himself from the case because the defense motion asking him to step down was "legally insufficient."
O'Mara posted on GZLegalCase.com saying the defense team, "will file a Petition for Writ of Prohibition with the 5th District Court of Appeal."
Zimmerman, 28, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed while walking through a Sanford neighborhood in February.
Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense.
