Great white shark returns to South Florida waters

Katherine the shark just off coast

ATLANTIC OCEAN – A familiar winter tourist in South Florida has returned, although this one has fins, a tail and very sharp teeth.

Katherine the great white shark is back in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, swimming just off the coast of Florida for the first time in almost 2 years.

Back in 2014, the 2,300 pound shark swam extremely close to South Florida shores in Miami-Dade and Broward County.

The 14-foot shark actually came close to downtown Miami.

Katherine is tracked by Ocearch, a group that collects data from sharks all over the world. But when Katherine went off the radar last year, there were thoughts she would not reappear.

However, Katherine's tracking tag "pinged" on Sunday, and she's been making her way down the coast of Florida ever since.

As of 10 a.m. Friday, Katherine was heading southwest, almost directly due east of Boynton Beach. Her current path takes her, you guessed it, to Miami Beach.

Such a tourist.
