BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – An injured sea turtle that the Brevard Zoo is caring for received a magnetic resonance imaging test at Health First for the first time ever, Health First said.

Health First officials said "Homeslice," a juvenile sea turtle, was found floating in the Mosquito Lagoon area of Canaveral National Seashore last summer.

Homeslice had suffered severe injuries to her carapace and head from a boat propeller.

After months of recovery, she needed an MRI to make sure her spine was healthy enough for her to survive on her own again in the wild, officials said.

"MRI machines are not big enough for sea turtles," Health First officials said. "Health First offers state-of-the-art 3D MRI technology, previously only used by humans."

Health First's radiology team worked with the Brevard Zoo veterinarian team to provide Homeslice with the scans she needed to be cleared for release.
