The medical examiner’s office determined that the skull is estimated to be hundreds of years old and that it is not part of any open investigation because of its age.

The bone fragment was sent to the Anthropology department at the University of Florida to be studied and carbon dated.

Anyone who finds potential human remains should not touch them and call 911, according to authorities.

The cranium is one of several bones found in the last three months in Volusia and Flagler Counties after Hurricane Matthew.
