John Morgan: Medical marijuana will be on Florida 2016 ballot

Measure failed in 2014

Attorney John Morgan and the group "United for Care" got enough signatures and congressional districts to put the medical marijuana amendment back on the ballot in November.

"We promised that last time we'd be back, that we only lost the battle not the war so we're coming back here 2016 to finish the battle and win the war," Morgan, the chairman of the organization said.

Morgan is confident Amendment 2, the state's medical marijuana measure, will get 60 percent of the votes needed to become law this year. The initiative barely failed in 2014 with 58 percent of voters saying yes on two.

"If we can pass this, 400,000 really sick and terminally ill people will benefit day one," Morgan said.

The measure will allow people who suffer from serious medical condition, like ALS and cancer, to go to a doctor who could recommend using medical marijuana as treatment.

"We're talking about the people who are sickest and most injured among us. We are talking about the most compassionate care for the people who deserve compassion more than anybody else in Florida," Morgan said.

Morgan adds major opponents during the last try, including Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd and Attorney General Pam Bondi, have not come out in opposition this year.

"Last time with our language Pam Bondi filed a brief opposing us, this time she did not," He said.

Morgan is hoping for more voter turnout this year because of the presidential election. He also says this time around he is not focusing so much on the young vote. Instead he's targeting seniors and educating them on medical marijuana.

"I plan to be in condominiums, I plan to be in towers, I plan to be talking to seniors about why this is for them and why not to be scared," he said.

Morgan says he has spent $7 million so far on the initiative and he is willing to spend whatever it takes so medical marijuana comes to Florida this year.

"So many people that we have met once we started are counting on us to finish this," Morgan said.
