Teen rescued after being dragged by rip current in Volusia Surfer dragged out 400 to 500 yards

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A 17-year-old surfer was rescued Sunday at a Volusia County beach after being dragged out 400 to 500 yards by a rip current.
The teen was able to use his surfboard to get the attention of beach goers. Two jet skis were launched and he was taken to shore.
Officials said the teen was assessed by lifeguards but was expected to be fine.
Red and purple flags were flown Sunday due to the hazardous rip currents.
Capt. AV Jenkins, with Volusia County Beach Safety, said they had a total of four water rescues.
