DeLAND, Fla. - Fliers promoting the Ku Klux Klan -- and accompanied with candy -- were found Monday at homes in a Central Florida neighborhood, causing concern and outrage among many residents.
Local 6 found that a handful of African-American families on East Voorhis Avenue in DeLand received the flier, which calls for "white America" to wake up.
"It was very disturbing. (I'm) shocked that in this day and age people could put something on someone's door like that," said a woman who does not want to be identified after a KKK flier was left on her front door in a plastic bag with peppermint candies.
She told Local 6 she feels violated and doesn't want her seven kids playing outside alone, fearing the fliers could turn to something more violent.
While DeLand police collected the parcels as evidence, they told Local 6 there is not much they can do because no crime was committed there. The fliers are protected by freedom of speech.
