Landfill stench prompts Apopka to issue advisory

APOPKA, Fla. – Residents near a landfill in Apopka could be affected by an odor that's been wafting in the area since a fire was reported earlier this month.

The Florida Department of Health released an advisory about the odor on Tuesday, saying anyone who lives near Keene Landfill should stay indoors with the windows and doors closed, check their air conditioner purifiers and filters to make sure they're functioning properly and contact their physicians if any health concerns develop.

The fire happened Nov. 22, when landfill personnel started up a flare and a piece of debris propelled from the stack, igniting a fire on the grass capping of the landfill. 

The Apopka Fire Department was able to extinguish the flames from a safe distance. The collection gas systems and flares are operating normally.
