‘A blessing:’ Free roof replacement program rolls out in St. Cloud

Program will be accepting 17 to 19 applicants

ST. CLOUD, Fla. – Habitat for Humanity is rolling out a roof repair program for St. Cloud residents.

The non-profit will receive funding from the city that will allow it to fix between 17 and 19 residents’ roofs for free.

Liz Alicea-Madera said her team is excited to bring this opportunity to people who live in St. Cloud after a successful program in Orange County.

She said replacing a roof can cost anywhere between $6,000 and $20,000.

“Having this opportunity at zero cost to them — it’s a benefit and a blessing beyond belief,” Alicea-Madera said.

You might be thinking, “What’s the catch?”

“There’s no catch; the opportunity is there,” Alicea-Madera said.

Here’s a list of eligibility requirements:

  • No mobile or manufactured homes
  • No townhomes
  • Maximum income requirements (check those by clicking here)
  • Must own and live in your home
  • Taxes & mortgage are current
  • Located in the city of St. Cloud
  • Certain specialized roof types may not be eligible

Once 17 to 19 applicants are approved, the program won’t be accepting any more applications.

“Don’t delay, apply today,” Alicea-Madera said.

You do not have to be a Habitat for Humanity homeowner to apply.

Michael Mills received a free roof through the program in Orange County.

“I can’t tell you how much of a blessing it was. It was a Godsend, and the people at Habitat made it happen, and I just thank them so much,” Mills said.

Mills lost his wife to cancer and has been raising two girls on his own. He said it has been tough, and paying to replace an entire roof would have been a big financial burden.

He found out he needed a new one after a solar panel company examined his roof.

“The roof was bad,” Mills said.

Mills said he told his insurance company.

“They dropped me when I told them I needed a roof,” Mills said.

So when he heard about the roof replacement program, he applied immediately.

Now, he absolutely loves his new roof.

“They did an excellent job,” Mills said. “It makes my house look brand new.”
